Kochi sewerage treatment project advances with pipeline survey

The Kerala Water Authority has started a survey for a 27-km sewage pipeline in Kochi as part of a larger sewerage project under AMRUT 2.0.

The survey covers several wards including Kadavanthra, Girinagar, and Panampilly Nagar. It aims to collect data on ground elevation and sewage generation. The authority has also begun retendering for a 5-MLD sewage treatment plant and a 17-km pipeline.

Kochi’s existing sewerage system meets only 5% of city needs. Most sewage flows into canals, causing pollution and public health risks. A KWA source noted that around 80% of consumed water becomes sewage.

The full project includes 1,400 manholes, one lifting station, and one collection well at Cheruparambath. It is designed for a 30-year span until 2056. The estimated cost is ₹185 crore, with completion expected within two years.

The treatment plant will use primary, secondary, and tertiary processes. Secondary treatment will employ moving bed biofilm reactor technology. Tertiary steps include sand filtration, activated carbon filtration, ultrafiltration, and disinfection.
