Lawyers group asks court to use Filipino in August

The Philippine Trial Lawyers Association has asked the Supreme Court to allow nationwide use of Filipino in courts during Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa in August.

According to the petition filed on July 8, the move aims to make the justice system more accessible to Filipinos who understand Filipino better than English.

PTLA president Pete Principe said Tagalog is the nucleus of the national language. Secretary general Yolando Lim cited the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte as an example where Tagalog use helped viewers.

The group stressed that the proposal aligns with the 1987 Constitution, which recognizes Filipino as the national language while preserving other Philippine languages.

It remains to be seen whether the Supreme Court will grant the request.
