Lightning strike causes province-wide blackout in Oriental Mindoro

A lightning strike at the Socorro Substation caused a total power outage across Oriental Mindoro late on July 22. The Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative reported the incident and has started phased restoration efforts.

The outage began at 11:23 p.m. on July 22 after lightning struck the substation in Oriental Mindoro. It damaged the Current Transformer/Potential Transformer and a suspension insulator, coinciding with a voltage surge that affected the entire province.

The Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative said it has begun restoring electricity by energizing feeders in phases. Inspection and corrective work at the substation continue to ensure personnel safety and system stability.

The cooperative stated it will issue further updates as more areas regain power until service is fully restored.
