New York man guilty of assaulting lost DoorDash driver

A New York man has been convicted of assaulting a DoorDash driver who arrived at the wrong address. John Reilly, 49, was found guilty on multiple felony charges stemming from a May 2025 shooting in Chester, Orange County. The victim suffered severe injuries requiring the removal of two feet of his small intestine.

John Reilly, the former Chester Highway Superintendent, was acquitted of attempted murder but convicted of first-degree assault with depraved indifference, second-degree assault, and nine felony weapons charges on March 26. The incident occurred on May 2, 2025, when 24-year-old DoorDash driver Alpha Barry got lost in Reilly's neighborhood after his phone battery died. Barry approached Reilly's home with a delivery order and asked if he had placed it. Reilly instructed him to leave the property, which Barry did while returning to his vehicle. As Barry drove away, Reilly emerged with a .45 caliber Glock pistol, fired one shot into his front lawn, and then several rounds at Barry's car. One bullet struck Barry in the lower back, causing devastating injuries that necessitated emergency surgery and the removal of two feet of his small bowel. Surveillance video from Reilly's home captured the shooting. Reilly's wife, Selina Nelson-Reilly, faces charges of hindering prosecution and tampering with evidence for allegedly deleting 17 smart doorbell videos. Her next court appearance is set for April 10. Reilly, who had been out on bail, was remanded following the verdict. He faces up to 25 years in prison at his sentencing on May 18.
