Pramono Anung promotes innovative waste processing for healthy Jakarta

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung is promoting environmentally friendly sanitation using biodigester technology. A communal biodigester installation in Pekayon Ward, Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta, was inaugurated through collaboration between Bank Jakarta and PMI DKI Jakarta. The program is part of efforts to achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) status for a healthier city.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung is demonstrating his commitment to a healthy Jakarta through sustainable sanitation approaches. On Saturday, November 15, 2025, a communal biodigester installation in Pekayon Ward, Pasar Rebo Subdistrict, East Jakarta, was inaugurated as a pilot model for safe and efficient domestic waste processing.

The collaboration between Bank Jakarta via Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding, PMI DKI Jakarta, and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government built this facility. The biodigester technology processes waste anaerobically, producing biogas as an alternative energy source for household cooking and lighting. Pramono Anung stated, “I want to develop ecosystems like this on a larger scale in Jakarta. Economically, this greatly helps residents.”

This program is part of accelerating Stop Buang Air Besar Sembarangan (SBS) or Open Defecation Free (ODF), included in the first pillar of Community-Based Total Sanitation (STBM). Pramono emphasized the dual benefits: a cleaner environment, economic savings for residents, and improved public health. “This encourages significant savings and provides important economic impacts for households. Moreover, overall community health levels will improve,” he said.

Bank Jakarta's President Director, Agus H. Widodo, added that the initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities. “We hope the community can feel the benefits of adequate sanitation facilities, while maximizing the use of renewable energy from domestic waste,” he said. The installation is expected to serve as an example for expansion to other areas in Jakarta.
