Princeton University to resume proctored exams starting July 1

Princeton University will bring back human proctors for exams beginning July 1 to address concerns over cheating with generative AI tools. The move reverses a 133-year-old policy that relied solely on an honor code without supervision. Faculty and students requested the change after surveys showed rising misuse of AI on personal devices.

The university's Committee of Examinations and Standing voted unanimously in April to reinstate proctoring. Instructors will now supervise tests and report violations to the student-run honor committee. The policy shift takes effect for all exams after July 1, 2026.
