Strict enforcement of the 1950 animal slaughter law has created a financial crisis for khatal owners in Sankrail, West Bengal. Traditional sales of unproductive cattle ahead of Bakrid have stopped, prompting buyers to demand refunds of advance payments.
Following the formation of the new government, strict implementation of the 1950 animal slaughter law has affected khatal operators in Sankrail block. They have long raised cows and buffaloes that were traditionally sold before Bakrid. Sales are now blocked, increasing their financial burden.
The owners have appealed to Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari for relief this year. They stated they will comply fully with rules from next year but need special arrangements now.
Sankrail Panchayat Samiti president Sonali Das said following the law is necessary yet the sudden change has troubled both buyers and sellers. BDO Dr. Kamrul Munir clarified that the process will proceed strictly as per the law.
