Virginia NICU nurse sentenced to three years for injuring babies

A Virginia nurse convicted of injuring nine premature babies will serve three years in prison after pleading no contest to child abuse charges. Erin Strotman, 27, was sentenced Friday in connection with fractures suffered by infants at Henrico Doctors' Hospital in Richmond.

Strotman pleaded no contest in January to nine counts of child abuse involving infants between 2022 and 2024. She was convicted the following month. The court sentenced her to 45 years, the maximum under state law, but suspended most of the term under a plea agreement. She will serve three years total. Henrico County Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor said she negotiated the deal due to challenges including limited video evidence and delays in reporting. Strotman apologized at the hearing, saying she never intended to harm the children. One parent expressed relief that Strotman was detained immediately after sentencing. The judge rejected a request for home confinement.
