The Madrid regional government approved a law today recognizing the embryo as a family member, backed by Vox and criticized by the opposition.
Isabel Díaz Ayuso's Partido Popular approved its law on the unborn conceived today in the plenary session. The measure passed with votes in favor from Vox.
The Mesa of the Vallecas Assembly had suspended its processing on June 17 due to a formal defect, leading to final approval in an extraordinary plenary. The law recognizes the embryo as a family unit member and allows women to request aid and tax benefits once pregnancy is accredited.
Families with two children expecting a third can access the large family title from the 14th week of gestation, effective six months after the norm is published. Regional government spokesperson Miguel Ángel García Martín stated it is a law in favor and does not conflict with any other legal text.
Opposition from PSOE and Más Madrid criticized the measure. Socialist Lorena Morales called it a legal botch and noted it does not help women or children.
