Fernando Martín's body recovered from Indonesia shipwreck; search for two missing children extended

Rescue teams in Indonesia recovered the body of Spanish ex-footballer and Valencia Femenino B coach Fernando Martín from the KM Putri Sakinah shipwreck that sank on December 26 near Padar Island, killing several members of a Valencian family. Two children remain missing as the search continues until Wednesday.

Update on the KM Putri Sakinah shipwreck (initially reported December 27): On January 4, 2026, Indonesian rescuers located the body of 44-year-old Fernando Martín approximately 1.13 nautical miles (two kilometers) from the site where the boat sank after being struck by large waves.

Martín was traveling with his wife Andrea Ortuño and four minors from their previous relationships. Ortuño and her seven-year-old daughter were the sole initial survivors; another of Ortuño's daughters was later recovered. The two still-missing children are nine-year-old Mateo (Martín's son) and ten-year-old Quique (Ortuño's son). Ortuño remains in Indonesia.

Fathur Rahman of BASARNAS confirmed the identification: "Based on the identification process results by the Police and Labuan Bajo Hospital, we can confirm it is Fernando Martín, 44 years old."

The families stated: "We will not return to Spain without the four, all together." They requested prayers and thanked Indonesian authorities for additional resources.

Authorities extended the search by three days until Wednesday and launched a police investigation into possible crew negligence.
