CNTE to start blockades at CDMX AFORES on June 18

The National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) is preparing blockades starting at 10:00 a.m. at several points on Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City. The sit-in in the Historic Center continues as the federal government maintains dialogue without new agreements.

Members of the CNTE will carry out blockades on Thursday in front of the AFORES located on Paseo de la Reforma Avenue, including the offices of MetLife, XXI Banorte, Profuturo, Inbursa, SURA and Citibanamex. The Secretariat of Citizen Security reported that road disruptions will begin at 10:00 a.m.

The CNTE maintains its sit-in around the Historic Center. Protesters demand the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE Law, a return to a solidarity pension system and better working conditions.

On Wednesday, June 17, CNTE representatives held a meeting with officials from SEGOB, SEP and ISSSTE that ended without new agreements. Education Secretary Mario Delgado reiterated that repealing the law is not viable due to its financial impact.

“Repression and intimidation are practices that this government is repeating,” said leader Elvira Veleces. The federal government keeps the dialogue channel open and has held more than 50 working groups in the past year.
