Mariano Robles and Solana Albornoz, aged 28 and 32, were found dead inside their car in Tafí Viejo, Tucumán, after a severe storm swept the vehicle into a drainage canal. The couple was returning from a wedding on Saturday night and leaves behind two small children. The incident raises the storm's death toll in the province to three.
Police and volunteer firefighters from Tucumán located the bodies around 2 p.m. on Sunday in Villa Nueva Italia, Tafí Viejo. The couple's white Nissan Versa was swept away by floodwaters during an intense storm on Saturday, ending up trapped in a mud- and debris-covered drainage canal.
Mariano Robles, an employee at Caja Popular, and Solana Albornoz, who worked at Casa de Gobierno, had attended a wedding at Salón Conticello. They stayed in touch with family until 9 p.m., reporting they would wait in the car until the water receded. Relatives filed a missing persons report at Lomas de Tafí police station and launched a social media campaign, posting messages like "We are desperate" and describing their clothing.
Police chief Joaquín Girvau confirmed the discovery, adding to the death of 12-year-old Lisandro, who was electrocuted in San Miguel de Tucumán after touching a dangling wire in standing water. The storm brought floods, river overflows, and the closure of National Route 65, with up to 270 millimeters of rain in some areas, impacting towns like Alpachiri, Chicligasta, and Monteros.
