James McAuley och Harold Stewart uppfann Ern Malley under en enda dag 1943. De fabricerade en biografi och 17 dikter, och skickade sedan materialet till Max Harris på Angry Penguins under namnet från en påhittad syster. Harris accepterade dikterna som äkta och ägnade höstnumret 1944 åt dem, komplett med en inledning och en omslagsmålning av Sidney Nolan.
