The Kenyan government will provide KSh200,000 to each family of the 16 students killed in the Utumishi Girls Academy dormitory fire and cover medical costs for injured students.
Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura announced the measures on Saturday. The package also includes support for the family of a parent who died in a road accident en route to the school and full coverage of funeral expenses. Mwaura stated that the government remains committed to prior promises despite media reports suggesting otherwise. All commitments are undergoing administrative and legal processes. The fire occurred on May 28 when students set a dormitory ablaze. DNA tests have identified the victims' bodies, and suspects remain in custody as investigations continue. Injured students were airlifted to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment.
