Hong Kong faces more rain and thunderstorms after Saturday rescues

Hong Kong can expect more showers with thunderstorms on Sunday, the Hong Kong Observatory said, after Saturday's downpours triggered an amber rainstorm warning and required hiker rescues. Rain was particularly heavy in Tai Po district.

The Hong Kong Observatory issued an amber rainstorm warning, the lowest in a three-tier system, at 11am on Saturday. Rain was particularly heavy in Tai Po district, according to the forecaster.

Police received a call at 11.47am from an elderly couple hiking on Tai To Yan, a challenging ridge in Tai Po. The pair—a 76-year-old man surnamed Chu and his 68-year-old wife surnamed Wong—said they lost their way when the weather turned bad. Firefighters brought the uninjured pair to safety.

About 45 minutes later, at 12.31pm, police received a report from three hikers in Southern district who had also lost their way.

The Observatory forecast more showers with some thunderstorms for Sunday.
