Designated Finance Minister Miguel Gómez attended a CAF event in Medellín on July 24, 2026, alongside President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella. He confirmed that the initial priority will be a fiscal adjustment to clean up public finances.
Gómez stated that the outgoing government's tax reform bill must be archived because it is misdirected. "It is poorly oriented; it is unfair to Colombians to make them pay for this government's 'party'," he said.
The incoming administration rejected Petro's proposal, which seeks to collect 21.9 trillion pesos in 2027. It argued that the 7.4% GDP fiscal deficit projected by CARF stems from prior decisions and that citizens should not bear that cost.
Gómez noted that the fiscal adjustment will send a message of austerity lasting several years. The filing of the new tax reform will possibly materialize in September, according to the official.
