Indonesia's futsal national team made history by reaching the final of the AFC Futsal 2026 for the first time, though they lost 4-5 on penalties to Iran after a 5-5 draw through extra time. The final took place at Indonesia Arena in Jakarta on Saturday, February 7, 2026. Earlier, Indonesia dominated the group stage with wins over South Korea 5-0, Kyrgyzstan 5-3, and a 1-1 draw against Iraq. In the knockouts, they defeated Vietnam 3-2 and Japan 5-3 in the semifinal.
This milestone marks a significant leap for Indonesian futsal, whose previous best was the quarterfinals in 2022. FFI Chairman Michael Sianipar assured that Spanish coach Hector Souto remains in place. "We have extended Hector Souto's contract. His tenure runs until 2028, up to the Futsal World Cup," Michael said after the final.
Michael stressed that FFI avoids specific targets, prioritizing top performance in every match. "In our futsal federation, we never talk about specific targets. We always emphasize giving your best in every game," he stated. Souto felt global support for Indonesia was strong. "In my opinion, today only one country wanted Iran to win. Around the world, many supported Indonesia," he remarked.
The impressive showing is projected to lift Indonesia's FIFA futsal ranking from 24th (1,190.97 points) by up to six spots to 18th. Looking ahead, the team eyes events like the AFF Futsal Cup, SEA Games, and Asian Cup, while FFI aims to host the 2028 Futsal World Cup.
