Investigation into death of Javier Andrés Otálvaro Medina in Neiva

The body of Javier Andrés Otálvaro Medina, a 33-year-old man held in Neiva's Temporary Detention Center, was taken to the National Institute of Legal Medicine to establish the causes of his death. Otálvaro Medina suffered health complications while in custody and died in a local clinic despite medical efforts. Authorities are examining the circumstances of his death, preliminarily reported as a cardiorespiratory arrest.

Javier Andrés Otálvaro Medina, 33 years old, was deprived of liberty in Neiva's Temporary Detention Center (CDT), located at carrera 10W with calle 25Q, in the El Triángulo neighborhood, near the old Santander bridge. The man had judicial records for crimes of violent carnal access with a minor under 14 years and qualified and aggravated theft. In December 2021, he was captured for illegal possession of firearms in a wooded area of the El Cortijo neighborhood, in Neiva's Comuna Dos, but a judge released him while the process continued.

The death occurred after Otálvaro Medina was transferred to Medilaser clinic due to health complications. He entered in critical condition and died in the Intensive Care Unit, despite the medical staff's efforts. Preliminarily, it is indicated that he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest, but authorities are investigating if other factors contributed to his death.

His body was taken to the National Institute of Legal Medicine in Neiva for an autopsy to clarify the exact causes. The investigations aim to determine the circumstances of the episode while he was in state custody. Otálvaro Medina was held as a person deprived of liberty (PPL) due to ongoing criminal processes.

The autopsy results will be key to verifying if there were irregularities. Judicial authorities continue the analysis to clarify the case.
