Israeli ambassador advocates normalizing relations with Chile

Peleg Lewi, Israel's ambassador, published a letter in La Tercera advocating for the normalization of diplomatic relations with Chile across all areas. It responds to prior opinions referencing Israel in analyses of Chile's foreign policy, highlighting shared principles and interests.

Peleg Lewi, Israel's ambassador, sent a letter to the editor of La Tercera responding to an opinion column by Jaime Abedrapo from Universidad San Sebastián and a letter by Richard J. Kouyoumdjian from AthenaLab. These pieces alluded to Israel within analyses of the focus of Chile's foreign policy, the first regarding principles and the second interests. Lewi states that Israel and Chile share principles not the norm in the Middle East, such as democracy, respect for human rights, social and religious diversity, freedom of opinion and press, gender equity, and recognition of sexual diversities. Regarding interests, both countries seek the well-being of their peoples against global challenges like water scarcity, food security, environmental protection, technology transfer, smart cities, and citizen security, among others. “Thus, we welcome with enthusiasm the normalization of diplomatic relations in all areas, as this is entirely plausible, productive, and coherent,” Lewi writes. The letter was published on March 18, 2026.
