Former Steelers player James Harrison has suggested a path for the team to sign cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to a contract extension without setting a new market record.
Harrison spoke Friday on his Deebo and Joe podcast about ongoing negotiations between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Porter. He said a deal at $25 million per year is unlikely because Porter believes his best seasons are ahead.
Harrison recommended that the Steelers fully guarantee a contract worth around $28 million annually if they want to avoid a record-setting agreement. He noted that Porter could reset the market after earning Pro Bowl or All-Pro honors this season.
The Steelers have already committed significant resources to their defense, including a recent extension for Nick Herbig. Top cornerbacks like Trent McDuffie earn $31 million per year, while Sauce Gardner and Derek Stingley Jr. make about $30 million annually.
Harrison acknowledged that full guarantees are rare for the Steelers, who typically limit them to the first year even for stars like T.J. Watt. The team has no clear backup option if Porter departs after next season.
