Kassio Nunes Marques selected as rapporteur for Bolsonaro criminal review at STF

Minister Kassio Nunes Marques was drawn on Monday (11) as rapporteur for the criminal review request filed by Jair Bolsonaro's defense at the Supreme Federal Court. The process seeks to annul the former president's conviction for attempted coup.

The draw was limited to ministers of the STF's Second Panel, since Luiz Fux had taken part in the original judgment in the First Panel. Kassio Nunes Marques, appointed by Bolsonaro, is expected to review the case only after assuming the TSE presidency on Tuesday (12).

The defense filed the request on Friday (8), citing judicial error repair. Lawyers Marcelo Bessa and Thiago Lôbo Fleury asked that the rapporteur be chosen only from Second Panel members to avoid Alexandre de Moraes.

The first step will be to request a statement from the Attorney General's Office. A Bolsonaro-allied lawyer estimates the process will take one to two years.
