Man lobbed grenade inside Army base in Maguindanao del Norte

A man on a motorcycle threw a hand grenade into an Army detachment in Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao del Norte, on Saturday night during the election gun ban, causing no injuries.

The incident occurred at 7:50 p.m. on July 18 in Barangay Macaguiling. CCTV footage captured the man slowing down, dismounting his motorcycle, throwing the grenade, and fleeing.

Lt. Colonel Ronald Suscano, spokesperson of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, said the explosive landed in the middle of the command post of the Charlie Company, 7th Infantry Battalion. He added that all Army units in the province have been placed on heightened alert.

“Their motive is clearly to disrupt the peace and order condition of the province,” Suscano said. Authorities are still investigating the attack, and no one has claimed responsibility.

The event took place on the fourth day of the election gun ban in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. The campaign period for the BARMM parliamentary elections begins on July 30.
