Myanmar assures ASEAN of Suu Kyi's good health

Myanmar's foreign minister told ASEAN counterparts that Aung San Suu Kyi is in good health and receiving proper care during a meeting in Bangkok.

Myanmar Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe made the statement on Sunday at the first informal meeting between ASEAN foreign ministers and their Myanmar counterpart since the February 2021 coup. Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow and Philippine Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro shared the details at a subsequent press conference.

“The premise of how he said is that she is a relative, she is a sister, and therefore, we will take care of her,” Lazaro said. Sihasak added that Myanmar's minister also confirmed Suu Kyi has access to all necessary facilities.

ASEAN ministers urged Myanmar to implement the Five-Point Consensus, which includes reducing violence, holding inclusive dialogues, and releasing more political prisoners. Sihasak suggested that Lazaro, as ASEAN’s special envoy, should meet Suu Kyi during her upcoming visit to verify the claims.
