OpenAI's launch of its GPT-5.6 model family on June 26 prompted a brief surge in trading of the LUNA2 token. Crypto traders reacted to the name overlap with the collapsed Terra blockchain project. The move lifted open interest in LUNA2 futures by 43 percent within minutes.
OpenAI introduced GPT-5.6 as a limited-preview frontier model family. The tiers include Sol as the flagship, Terra as the mid-range option, and Luna as the fast, low-cost tier. The rollout is restricted to vetted partners via API and Codex at the request of the US government.
The Luna name immediately drove activity in LUNA2 futures on Binance. The price rose from around $0.0486 to a high of $0.0513 on the five-minute chart. Open interest expanded from 36.5 million LUNA2 to 52.3 million LUNA2, while funding turned positive at 0.01 percent.
LUNA2 serves as the governance token for the residual Terra 2.0 blockchain that survived the May 2022 collapse. That event wiped out roughly $50 billion in valuation and led to fraud charges against Terraform Labs and Do Kwon. Traders treated the name match as a short-term semantic arbitrage opportunity unrelated to any fundamentals of the token.
