The Philippines lost its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council to Kyrgyzstan in a vote held on June 3, 2026.
The United Nations General Assembly conducted four rounds of voting in New York City. Kyrgyzstan secured 142 votes while the Philippines received 49, falling short of the required two-thirds majority of 128 votes. Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro issued a statement respecting the outcome and congratulating Kyrgyzstan. She thanked supporters and reaffirmed the Philippines' commitment to peace, international law, and cooperation. Austria, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe also won seats for the 2027-2028 term. Kyrgyzstan will serve on the council for the first time, replacing Pakistan.
