The Pretoria High Court has issued a warrant of arrest for cultural activist Ngizwe Mchunu after finding him guilty of contempt of court. He faces ten days in prison.
The Pretoria High Court ordered Mchunu's arrest and detention following a civil defamation case brought by Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema. The case stems from remarks Mchunu made outside the Union Buildings in April that accused Malema of protecting undocumented foreign nationals and receiving R60 million from Nigerian drug cartels. The court ruled in Malema's favour and directed Mchunu to issue a public apology. It also found that Mchunu had violated previous court orders related to the defamatory statements. The Economic Freedom Fighters confirmed the ruling on social media, stating that the Gauteng High Court had issued the arrest warrant.
