Rafael Devers apologizes to Tony Vitello after controversy

San Francisco Giants slugger Rafael Devers apologized to manager Tony Vitello on Tuesday following a pinch-runner dispute during Sunday's loss to the Miami Marlins.

Devers attempted to wave off a pinch-runner in the ninth inning of the 2-1 defeat. He later slammed his helmet in the dugout.

Devers explained the incident as a misunderstanding tied to concerns over his hamstring. "I just thought he was taking me out of my game because of my hamstring," he said through an interpreter. "And if he felt I was disrespecting him, that's why I went into his office and I apologized to him."

Vitello noted Devers had shown some leg soreness earlier in the series. President of baseball operations Buster Posey said both sides view the matter as resolved and emphasized that everyone makes missteps.

The Giants stand at 32-46 and are out of postseason contention.
