Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Alex Highsmith may hold in during the team's upcoming training camp amid contract concerns. Beat writer Ray Fittipaldo raised the possibility after Highsmith missed mandatory minicamp.
Highsmith was absent from Wednesday's minicamp session due to an upset stomach. Speculation had linked the absence to dissatisfaction with Nick Herbig's recent contract extension. Fittipaldo told 93.7 The Fan that he would not be surprised if Highsmith held in. He noted that Highsmith's representatives might seek more money and pointed to the player's history of similar actions to secure a new deal. Highsmith started every season since his sophomore year and recorded a team-high 9.5 sacks in 2025 despite missing four games. His current average yearly value of $17 million ranks third on the team and tied for 27th among edge rushers leaguewide. Highsmith has two years remaining on his 2023 extension. The Steelers could address his situation with a raise ahead of next offseason.
