Tommy Pham to opt out of Orioles minor league contract

The Baltimore Orioles signed Tommy Pham to a minor league deal on May 16 but the 38-year-old outfielder now plans to leave the organization without playing in an MLB game for the club.

Pham is exercising an opt-out clause in his contract after not being promoted to the majors by Friday, according to a source. The Orioles have not confirmed the development.

The veteran appeared in 16 games for Triple-A Norfolk, batting .197 with four home runs and 11 RBIs. He showed improvement recently, going 7-for-26 with three homers in his past seven contests.

Baltimore added Pham after outfielder Dylan Beavers went on the 10-day injured list May 13 with a right oblique strain. The Orioles currently carry four outfielders on their 26-man roster along with utility player Blaze Alexander.

Pham had gone 0-for-13 in nine games with the New York Mets earlier this season before joining the Orioles.
