USP creates commission to resume dialogue with striking students

The USP administration announced on Wednesday the creation of a moderation and institutional dialogue commission to negotiate with students on strike for a month. The body will include professionals experienced in conflict mediation. The decision comes after an impasse and occupation of the rectory.

The administration of the University of São Paulo stated that the new debate channel will involve student representatives and management members. The names of the professionals were not disclosed nor the date of the first meeting, which will be scheduled promptly.

Students demand that Papfe aid rise from R$ 885 to R$ 1,804 monthly, the value of the São Paulo minimum wage. The administration proposed an adjustment to R$ 912, rejected by the Central Student Directory. The strike began on April 14 and halted more than a hundred courses.

More than 70 professors signed an open letter condemning the eviction of the rectory building by the Military Police on May 10. The document calls for reopening negotiations and ensures that no student suffers punishment. Cruesp meets on Thursday to discuss the issue.
