Vallejo backs Orellana's statements on first lady's role

On Friday, following the cabinet meeting chaired by President Gabriel Boric, Government General Secretary Minister Camila Vallejo addressed the recent statements by Women’s Minister Antonia Orellana on the President-Elect’s Office intention to revive the first lady's role, to be held by María Pía Adriasola, wife of José Antonio Kast.

Orellana had noted that the current government prevented public officials from depending solely on being the president's partner, setting aside some strident remarks. Vallejo, during the press briefing at La Moneda, called these words respectful toward the incoming administration's choice.

"I heard Minister Antonia Orellana and she has been extremely respectful of the eventual decision the next administration may take," Vallejo stated. She added that the first lady's role involves dialogue with institutions previously under sociocultural direction and now housed in ministries.

Vallejo reinforced the current Executive's stance: "We made a decision at the time because we understood or believed that positions handling public resources should not fall to the President's relatives." Nonetheless, she emphasized that the government respects whatever the new administration decides, whether to adopt this figure or not.
