Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged Sweden to help rebuild trust between the two countries and cultivate a correct perception of each other. He spoke to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Stockholm on Saturday.

“Sweden was the first Western country that established diplomatic relations with China, which showed Sweden’s independence and strategic foresight while setting an example globally,” Wang said, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. He added that strengthening dialogue and enhancing understanding have become particularly crucial.

Wang is visiting Nordic countries amid an EU debate on responding to Beijing’s trade practices. Brussels complains that subsidised Chinese firms undercut local industries, a charge Beijing denies.
