Treyarch announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 will arrive on PlayStation consoles in July as ports rather than remasters. The re-releases will include the original campaign, Zombies, and multiplayer modes. Activision confirmed the games will be available on PS4 and PS5.
Treyarch made the announcement on X, noting that Iron Galaxy is handling the porting work. The move follows earlier leaks and listings on Korea's rating board.
Activision stressed that these are straightforward ports and not remasters. As a result, the titles will not be native to PS5 and are unlikely to support features such as 120Hz refresh rates.
Potential issues include locked framerates affecting gameplay physics and the possibility of using existing server infrastructure. This could expose multiplayer to hacked lobbies similar to those affecting the original PS3 versions.
The approach mirrors Rockstar's 2023 re-release of Red Dead Redemption on PS4, providing access on modern PlayStation hardware without full backward compatibility.
