Amazon has cast Sonya Walger in the recurring role of Vanir goddess Freya for its live-action God of War TV series, following earlier announcements for Thor and Odin. Sonya Walger will portray Freya, a powerful Vanir goddess, former Queen of the Valkyries, Odin's ex-wife, and the Witch of the Woods in Amazon's adaptation of the God of War games. Exiled after their marriage, she lives reclusively in Midgard, wielding ancient magic and haunted by regrets from Asgard and Vanaheim.
This casting builds on prior reveals: Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Severance) as the troubled Thor; Mandy Patinkin (Homeland) as the cunning Odin; Ryan Hurst as Kratos; Callum Vinson as Atreus; Teresa Palmer as Phoebe/Sif; and Max Parker as Heimdall. Earlier this year, an image showcased Hurst and Vinson as Kratos and Atreus, mirroring the 2018 game's opening.
Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica) leads as showrunner, with direction from Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun). No release date is set, but Amazon's early renewal signals high expectations.
