Blizzard has dismissed a senior QA developer following an internal investigation into cheating in World of Warcraft. The company confirmed the employee used an unauthorized spell to assist players in completing a Mythic dungeon.
The studio issued a statement on July 24 stating that the incident involved a single employee acting in violation of company policy. "We can confirm that this was the action of a single Blizzard employee, in violation of our Code of Conduct," the statement reads. "This employee is no longer with the company effective immediately. We are also taking action against the player accounts that were complicit in this violation."
Internal tools such as the spell in question are logged and reviewed by the Platform Security team. Blizzard noted that these tools are intended only for legitimate development work and testing.
Players on social media have responded positively to the company's quick response. Some expressed support for the druid tank who shared combat logs that brought the matter to light, while others raised questions about whether similar actions may have occurred before.
