A glitch in World of Warcraft allowed the Withering Contagion debuff to spread beyond its intended dungeon, killing players across the Moon Guard server. The incident, dubbed Corrupted Blood 2.0, was contained within hours after a hotfix on July 3.
The Withering Contagion debuff originated from the NPC Vile Rothexer in Brackenhide Hollow. Players who encountered the effect outside the dungeon emitted green goo explosions and inflicted high nature damage on contact.
The bug affected multiple locations on the Moon Guard U.S. server, including the Lion's Pride Inn where recordings showed numerous slime-covered player corpses. The glitch had been active for an unknown period before July 3.
Blizzard applied a hotfix on July 3 that ended the spread. The event echoes the original Corrupted Blood incident from 2005, though that plague persisted for weeks across Azeroth.
One player noted the debuff dealt 23,360 nature damage per trigger, posing an immediate threat to lower-level characters.
