Bolivian security forces launched an operation on Saturday to clear blocked routes in La Paz and El Alto amid protests against President Rodrigo Paz that have lasted three weeks.
The operation, called the “Humanitarian Corridor of the White Flags”, involved the police, armed forces and machinery from the Bolivian Road Administrator. Public Works Minister Mauricio Zamora stated that the goal is to ensure the supply of food, fuel and medicines.
The protests, driven by groups including the Bolivian Workers' Central and Evo Morales supporters, have caused shortages and at least four deaths due to lack of medical care. Clashes in El Alto and on the road to Oruro saw protesters throw stones and firecrackers while police responded with tear gas.
President Rodrigo Paz Pereira thanked Argentina for sending Hercules planes to create an air bridge for food supplies. Paz said his government prioritizes dialogue but warned that “everything has a limit” amid the crisis affecting fuel and medicine supplies.
