Centrão members advised Senate President Davi Alcolumbre to unblock the hearing for Attorney-General Jorge Messias, nominated by Lula to the STF. The government plans to send the formal nomination message in the coming days, despite resistances. Lawmakers argue that delaying offers no benefits.
Senators close to Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP) suggest he reduce resistances and schedule the hearing for Jorge Messias, nominated by President Lula last November for the Supreme Court (STF) vacancy left by Luís Roberto Barroso. The Attorney-General of the Union (AGU) requires approval from the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) and the Senate plenary to take office. Amid oppositions, the government delayed sending the formal nomination message, stalling the process. Planalto sources state that Lula intends to formalize the nomination in the coming days, with a deadline in early April. Governing base lawmakers note the announcement was made four months ago and delaying until after elections would be disadvantageous. Lula wants a meeting with Alcolumbre this week, though no date is set. The Centrão advises against extending commissions or creating new ones for parallel investigations, such as that of Banco Master.
