Chinese navy enters Sea of Japan as Japan deploys long-range missiles

Five Chinese navy ships transited the Tsushima Strait and headed northeast into the Sea of Japan, coinciding with Japan's Ground Self-Defence Force deploying new Type 25 long-range surface-to-ship guided missiles and hypervelocity gliding projectiles. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning condemned the deployments as 'neo-militarism' and expressed serious concern.

Five ships from the PLA Navy transited the Tsushima Strait and were tracked heading northeast into the Sea of Japan. This movement occurred just as the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force added the newly designated Type 25 long-range surface-to-ship guided (SSM) missile and hypervelocity gliding projectiles (HGP).

The deployments took place at sites including Camp Kengun in Kumamoto, Kyushu. China's defence ministry warned last month that these actions represent 'neo-militarism in Japan, which has become more than just a perilous tendency but a very real threat that may wreak havoc on regional peace and security'.

At Wednesday's press briefing, foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning condemned the move as 'neo-militarism' and said China was 'seriously concerned'. She criticised Japan for deploying offensive weapons under the guise of a 'defensive counterstrike', stating it exceeded the scope of self-defence and Japan's exclusively defensive stance.

China has strongly protested the Japanese deployments.

China's navy conducted training flights from its aircraft carrier Liaoning in the Pacific after passing waters off Okinawa, prompting Japan to scramble Self-Defense Force jets. Chinese fighters locked radar onto Japanese aircraft twice, leading to a strong protest from Tokyo. The incident occurs amid heightened tensions over Taiwan.

China's Defense Ministry on Saturday urged the international community to firmly oppose Japan's reckless moves toward neo-militarism, in response to recent comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

China's Liaoning aircraft carrier and Chinese-Russian bombers approached Japan's Pacific coasts off Shikoku and the Kii Peninsula in December before turning back together, coinciding with US-Japan joint drills and potentially testing allied readiness, Defense Ministry sources told Jiji Press.

China's military has announced large-scale exercises around Taiwan codenamed 'Justice Mission 2025,' set for Tuesday. The drills will emphasize port blockades and deterrence against external forces, following Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's comments on potential intervention and recent U.S. arms sales to the island.

China’s People’s Liberation Army has accused Japan of pushing towards space militarisation, warning it could trigger an arms race. Articles in the PLA Daily target Tokyo’s defence and intelligence plans. This occurs as Japan ramps up space activities in response to perceived threats from China and Russia.

China's People's Liberation Army announced on New Year's Eve that it had "successfully completed" two days of military exercises in the waters off Taiwan. The drills, named "Justice Mission 2025," aimed to assert Beijing's sovereignty over the island, escalating tensions in East Asia. Japan and other nations have expressed concerns over the maneuvers.

Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested the possibility of Self-Defense Forces deployment in a Taiwan contingency, prompting a threatening social media post from a Chinese diplomat that drew strong protests from Tokyo. Takaichi refused to retract her statements, claiming they aligned with the government's views, but said she would avoid specific scenarios in future. The exchange has heightened tensions in Japan-China relations.
