Chinese scientists develop HG-STR algorithm for drone warfare

Chinese researchers have unveiled an algorithm called HG-STR that enables drone swarms to identify and eliminate targets autonomously even without communications or clear vision.

The HG-STR algorithm, or Heterogeneous Graph Spatio-Temporal Reasoning, allows fleets of fixed-wing drones to search large battlefields and remove all enemies independently.

It distinguishes between friend, foe and terrain as separate data types, unlike traditional systems.

A Beijing-based defence expert not involved in the study noted that most current drone operations remain under remote human control.

The work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and published in Acta Aeronautica et Astronautica Sinica.

A team from Xidian University has developed a car-mounted microwave wireless power system that kept fixed-wing drones airborne for up to 3.1 hours. The system uses GPS positioning, dynamic tracking, and onboard flight controls to maintain alignment between the emitter and drone during flight. The findings were published on March 25 in the peer-reviewed journal Aeronautical Science & Technology.

PLA Daily published a commentary on Thursday stating that AI use in the Iran war marks the first integration across the full cycle of operations, demonstrating its vast potential and strategic value in the military domain. The article called AI a 'core engine' reshaping warfare and urged the People's Liberation Army to rapidly transform for combat advantage.

Egypt's Ministry of Local Development and Environment has signed a cooperation agreement with Drone Tech to deploy a smart aerial monitoring system using AI-powered drones and geospatial analysis. The system aims to modernize oversight in areas like building violations, waste management, and pollution tracking. Environment Minister Manal Awad called the project a "qualitative leap" in monitoring systems.

Ukraine has announced it will share its battlefield data with allies to help train AI models for drone software. The move aims to strengthen technological cooperation amid the ongoing war with Russia. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov described it as a step toward win-win partnerships.
