Conagua warns of heavy May and June rains for World Cup 2026

Mexico's National Meteorological Service forecasts a very active 2026 rainy season in May and June, particularly in central Mexico, potentially impacting World Cup matches at Estadio Banorte. SMN director Fabián Vázquez Romaña said these projections were shared with FIFA. From July to September, rains will be in line with or below average.

Mexico's National Meteorological Service (SMN) under the National Water Commission (Conagua) presented 2026 rainy season projections in a press conference. SMN director general Fabián Vázquez Romaña explained that May and June will be very rainy in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area and Cutzamala System regions.

These forecasts were shared with FIFA's World Cup 2026 organizing team. “We had talks with FIFA for several months and they are prepared for a rainy scenario. We told them how the season behaves in Mexico City; how it behaves in Monterrey; how it behaves in Guadalajara,” Vázquez Romaña detailed.

From July to September, rains will be near or below historical averages in the northeast, center, east, south, and southeast regions, influenced by El Niño and the canícula period. October will see increased precipitation. The Mexican monsoon will bring rains to the northwest in June, decreasing in July and rising in September-October.

For the cyclone season, 18-21 named storms are forecast in the Pacific and 11-15 in the Atlantic. In Mexico City, Mayor Clara Brugada's government proposed suspending classes and promoting home office on days of Mexico national team matches.
