Constitutional Court Justice Anwar Usman to retire end of 2026, Supreme Court forms selection panel

The Supreme Court (MA) has formed a selection committee to find a replacement for Constitutional Court Justice Anwar Usman, who will retire at the end of 2026. MA Chief Justice Sunarto emphasized the need for a balance of knowledge and faith in prospective judges. The selection process involves various community figures and academics.

Jakarta – The Supreme Court (MA) has officially formed a selection committee (pansel) to screen candidates to replace Constitutional Court Justice Anwar Usman, who will enter retirement at the end of 2026. This was announced by MA Chief Justice Sunarto during a statement at the MA Building in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Sunarto said the formation document for the pansel was signed by him about two months ago. The committee is chaired by Deputy Chief Justice for Judicial Affairs Suharto and includes technocrats, community leaders, and academics from various universities. The goal is to find the best constitutional court justice who balances knowledge and faith.

"Knowledge without faith, as the wise say, is like a lamp in the hand of a thief, but faith alone without knowledge is like a lamp in the hand of a baby," Sunarto stated, illustrating the risks if one aspect is lacking. He added that the process is underway and is expected to yield the best candidates from MA's top talents.

Anwar Usman, nominated by the MA, was born in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, on December 31, 1956. He is currently 69 years old. His retirement is based on Article 23 paragraph (1) letter c of Law Number 7 of 2020 on the Constitutional Court, which mandates honorable dismissal at age 70.

This step demonstrates the MA's commitment to maintaining the quality of constitutional justice in Indonesia.

Indonesia's Constitutional Court, in Decision No. 114/PUU-XXIII/2025, ruled that active police officers must resign or retire to hold civil positions. The ruling eliminates the provision for assignment by the police chief to roles unrelated to policing duties. Government officials and police have pledged to respect and implement the decision.

The process of appointing Adies Kadir as a Constitutional Court (MK) judge candidate by Indonesia's DPR has been deemed compliant with legal and constitutional standards. Constitutional law experts confirm that the mechanism is clearly outlined in the 1945 Constitution. The switch from Inosentius Samsul to Adies Kadir is also legally justified.

Indonesia's Constitutional Court has ruled that active police officers cannot hold civil positions without resigning or retiring. The decision addresses a legal loophole in the Police Law and prompts withdrawals from various ministries. Some ministers highlight the benefits of police presence, while Polri forms a team for implementation.

As the first trial in the Chromebook corruption case looms on December 23, 2025, Nadiem Makarim's lawyer insists the former minister is still recovering from surgery and cannot attend, clashing with the Attorney General's Office claim that he is healthy. This uncertainty clouds proceedings at the Jakarta Corruption Court.

One week after South Korea's judicial reform laws took effect on March 12—introducing constitutional appeals and penalties for 'law distortion'—complaints against top judges have risen sharply. The National Assembly is set to vote Thursday on the remaining two bills of the 'judiciary trio,' prompting fears of paralyzing the judiciary.

Chile's Supreme Court will elect its new president on Monday amid internal divisions and scandals like the Audio case and the Belarusian plot, which have eroded public trust in the judiciary. Tradition favors Gloria Ana Chevesich, but a group is pushing for María Angélica Repetto to break that practice. The election coincides with the vote on a constitutional accusation against Minister Diego Simpertegui.
