Consumer groups report tiktok, meta and google for scam ads

Thirty European consumer organizations have reported TikTok, Meta and Google to the EU Commission for failing to protect users sufficiently from scam ads.

The organizations, representing 27 countries, argue that the platforms violate the DSA rules. They reviewed around 900 suspected scam ads between December 2025 and March 2026.

Only 27 percent of reports resulted in ads being removed, while 52 percent were rejected or received no response. Johanna Hållén, secretary general of Sveriges Konsumenter, notes that many ads promise quick loans or retirement in two days.

Hållén hopes for a review by the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority and fines from the EU Commission if the rules are not followed.

The Swedish government has received approval from the EU Commission for a fast-track on a new law forcing social media platforms to remove gang recruitment material within one hour. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer described it as the first such legislation in any EU member state. The law targets the recruitment of children into gangs via platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat.

The Consumer Federation of America has filed a proposed class-action lawsuit against Meta, accusing the company of failing to protect users from scam advertisements on Facebook and Instagram. The suit, alleging violations of Washington D.C. consumer protection laws, claims Meta has misled users and prioritized profits over safety. It includes examples of scam ads found in Meta's ad library.

Meta has introduced AI-powered tools and user alerts to combat industrialized scamming on its platforms. The company removed 10.9 million accounts linked to criminal scam centers in 2025. These measures follow collaborations with law enforcement and legal actions against scammers.

Indonesia plans to restrict social media access for children under 16, following Australia's lead. The new regulation targets major platforms and requires them to delete underage accounts. Implementation begins on March 28 with a phased approach.

Consumers increasingly rely on peer reviews from platforms like Reddit and TikTok to navigate online shopping distrust fueled by AI content. Brands such as Medicube and Alo Yoga are integrating these reviews into their strategies for growth and trust-building. Experts highlight reviews' role as human validation in an algorithm-driven market.
