County Board warns of rise in European foulbrood cases

The Swedish Board of Agriculture reports more cases of European foulbrood in Kalmar County. The county board urges beekeepers to stay vigilant.

The Swedish Board of Agriculture has noted a rise in cases of European foulbrood. The disease is caused by the bacterium Melissococcus plutonius and mainly affects larvae in bee colonies.

The county board in Kalmar län has issued a call to beekeepers. They should watch closely for symptoms and take steps to limit spread.

Bitillsynsman Erik Olsson says professional beekeepers are distressed. He warns the disease could spread widely with uncertain results.

The disease is not covered by legislation. An infected colony can be moved but this lowers honey output.
