The pine processionary caterpillar has taken over areas on Gotland and Öland. Residents report severe itching and rashes from the larvae.
Göran Kring is experiencing the worst outbreak in 40 years at his cottage in Djupvik on Gotland. Meals have moved indoors and grandchildren can no longer run barefoot.
The larvae shoot hairs that cause itching and rashes. Authorities urge distance but that is difficult near homes.
At Böda Sand on Öland camping guests suspect they have seen the larvae. The county board advises caution especially for dogs.
The larvae are now burrowing to become butterflies. Healthcare advice lines have received more calls.
