DA to set P53 per kilo SRP for local rice

The Department of Agriculture will impose a suggested retail price of P53 per kilo for local rice after reaching a deal with industry stakeholders.

DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the price serves as a guide for consumers on fair local rice prices rather than a price ceiling. The move aims to balance farmers’ profits and consumers’ budgets.

The SRP positions local rice slightly above imported five-percent broken rice, which carries a P50 per kilo cap for 30 days starting May 15. Tiu Laurel noted the cap was calibrated using landed import costs of P37 to P38 per kilo.

Full enforcement of the imported rice price cap of P50 will start next week to give retailers and consumers time to adjust.

About 77 percent of the national harvest is already in. The National Food Authority is raising its buying price to counter the decline.

The Department of Agriculture has stepped up inspections at markets and stores nationwide after President Marcos imposed a 30-day price ceiling on imported rice. Violators risk jail terms, fines up to one million pesos and possible business closures under the Price Act.

The National Strategic Food Price Information Center (PIHPS), managed by Bank Indonesia, records chicken eggs at Rp32,000 per kilogram and shallots at Rp45,950 per kg at the national retail level. The data was released on Friday morning at 06:35 WIB in Jakarta. Prices for other strategic food commodities were also noted as stable.
