DHL takes delivery of first Tesla electric semi after trial

Logistics company DHL has received its first Tesla electric semi-truck following a successful two-week trial. The vehicle impressed during operations in California, demonstrating efficient long-haul capabilities. This move supports DHL's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

In October 2024, DHL Supply Chain USA conducted a two-week pilot program for the Tesla Semi in California, covering 3,000 miles of operations. The trial included a notable 390-mile journey hauling a gross combined weight of 75,000 pounds. The truck's performance stood out for its ability to manage typical DHL freight over extended distances on a single charge.

DHL Supply Chain North America Transportation President Jim Monkmeyer commented, “Our pilot of the Tesla Semi exceeded expectations, proving its ability to efficiently haul a typical DHL freight over long distances on a single charge.” The Tesla Semi offers an estimated range of 500 miles, accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 20 seconds, and consumes 2 kWh per mile.

By December 2025, DHL had taken delivery of its first Tesla electric semi in North America, marking a significant advancement in its fleet. The company reports that the vehicle requires charging only once a week, highlighting its efficiency for logistics operations. This acquisition aligns with DHL's broader commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050, as electric vehicles like the Semi reduce reliance on fossil fuels in trucking.

While other firms are exploring similar transitions, DHL's adoption underscores growing interest in Tesla's electric semi for long-haul applications across North America.

California's clean-truck incentive program has set aside around $165 million for the Tesla Semi, despite the electric truck not yet entering series production. This allocation, part of the Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project, has sparked concerns over market concentration and its effects on competing manufacturers. The funding aims to boost zero-emission vehicles in a sector that contributes heavily to air pollution and emissions.

Following Tesla's unveiled 2026 roadmap, the company continues its transformation amid market volatility, pushing AI innovations and ramping up Tesla Semi production to seize opportunities in electric commercial transport.
