Tesla gains approval for Full Self-Driving in Netherlands

Tesla has received approval for its advanced driver assistance software "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" in the Netherlands, the first European country. The Dutch vehicle authority RDW approved the system, which handles most driving tasks on highways and in city traffic under human supervision. Tesla is seeking approvals in other European countries.

Tesla introduced the "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" software in the Netherlands on Friday, as the company announced. Prior to approval, the US manufacturer tested the system internally across Europe. The RDW stated that the assistance system can enhance road safety if used correctly.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has promised for years that Full Self-Driving will eventually enable Tesla vehicles to drive fully autonomously. In the current version, however, the driver remains responsible and must be ready to intervene at any time. The software has been available in the US for years; early on there were many errors, but Musk now highlights extensive improvements.

Tesla operates a factory in Grünheide near Berlin, where the bestseller Model Y is built. The approval could pave the way for other European markets.

Tesla announced that the Dutch regulator RDW has committed to approving its Full Self-Driving software in February 2026, but the agency quickly clarified that only a demonstration is scheduled. This discrepancy highlights ongoing tensions in Europe's strict regulatory environment for autonomous driving features. The development could impact Tesla's plans to expand FSD across the European Union.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised could receive regulatory approval in the Netherlands as early as March 20. He shared this update during an interview at Giga Berlin, citing information from local authorities. The approval would mark the first such greenlight for the software in Europe.

Tesla has begun offering passenger ride-alongs for its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software in Italy, France, and Germany. The program allows participants to experience the system handling real-world traffic from the passenger seat, with Tesla employees driving. This initiative precedes an expected regulatory approval in the Netherlands by February 2026.

Tesla's Full Self-Driving technology allows vehicles to handle much of the driving, but Idaho law treats the human occupant as the responsible driver. This means no exemptions for distracted driving or DUI offenses. The system requires constant attention from the driver at all times.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into Tesla's Full Self-Driving system after receiving dozens of complaints about traffic violations. The probe covers 2.88 million vehicles and follows reports of 14 crashes and 23 injuries linked to the feature. This marks the third such inquiry into Tesla this year.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has indicated that Full Self-Driving (Supervised) could launch in the United Arab Emirates as early as January 2026. This follows his recent visit to the country and a direct response on X to a local analyst's query. The news has sparked excitement among users anticipating advanced autonomous features in Middle Eastern cities.

Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system has accumulated over 8.4 billion cumulative miles driven worldwide as of March 2, 2026, per the company's safety page—nearing CEO Elon Musk's 10 billion mile target for safe unsupervised self-driving. In parallel, Tesla has begun supervised FSD testing in Abu Dhabi under local oversight.
