Duterte had rare falling episodes in ICC detention cell

Former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte experienced rare falling episodes inside his cell at the International Criminal Court detention facility in The Hague, according to a recent filing by the ICC Registry. No incidents have occurred in the past 30 days.

The ICC Registry disclosed the details in a May 13 filing made public recently. Ergonomic adjustments were made to items in Duterte’s cell and visiting rooms to improve his movement and stability.

“On rare occasions where Mr. Duterte did have a fall, ICC (Detention Centre) custody staff were able to respond immediately to assist him and immediately call for medical assessment,” the seven-page document stated. It was signed by Marc Dubuisson, director of the ICC Registry’s Division of Judicial Services.

The Department of Foreign Affairs added that no action is expected from the United Nations regarding claims by a Japanese non-government organization seeking Duterte’s provisional release.
