Embedded tooth reveals T. rex attack on Edmontosaurus

A fossilized Edmontosaurus skull with a Tyrannosaurus tooth still lodged in its face provides rare evidence of a predator-prey encounter from 66 million years ago. Researchers analyzed the specimen at Montana State University's Museum of the Rockies. The study was published in the journal PeerJ.

The nearly complete skull was uncovered in 2005 in the Hell Creek Formation of eastern Montana. A broken tyrannosaur tooth remains embedded in the dinosaur's face, offering direct clues about the attack.

CT scans and comparisons with other fossils confirmed the tooth belonged to a Tyrannosaurus. Researchers noted no signs of healing around the wound, suggesting the bite may have been fatal.

"The position of the tooth suggests that it met its attacker face-to-face," said Taia Wyenberg-Henzler of the University of Alberta. John Scannella, curator at the museum, added that the fossil captures a behavior in the moment of the bite.

The findings provide new details on how Tyrannosaurus hunted its prey in the region that is now Montana.

A 75-million-year-old fossilized foot bone from Montana shows bite marks from a smaller tyrannosaur feeding on a much larger relative. Researchers used 3D scans to document this evidence of scavenging behavior. The finding, published this year, highlights opportunistic feeding among these ancient predators.

A new species of massive marine reptile, Tylosaurus rex, has been described from fossils unearthed in northern Texas. The 43-foot-long mosasaur lived about 80 million years ago and ranks among the largest of its kind. Researchers published the findings on May 21, 2026.

Paleontologists have identified a new raptor-like dinosaur species that lived about 70 million years ago in southern Patagonia. Named Kank australis, the creature likely hunted fish using adaptations similar to those of modern herons.

Researchers have described a previously unknown sauropod dinosaur from fossils found in Argentina's Chubut province. The creature, called Bicharracosaurus dionidei, reached about 20 meters in length and lived around 155 million years ago.
